Our Story

The Linda Jane Foundation is a Virginia based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to breaking down financial barriers and stigmas that prevent women from accessing essential mental health care and support services. Mental health challenges affect millions of women across our nation, yet many face significant financial obstacles in seeking the help they need.

Inspired by two women of the ‘Baby Boomer’ Generation (1946-1964), Linda & Susan Jane, The Linda Jane Foundation was created posthumously to honor these women. Linda and Susan Jane were raised by the ‘Silent Generation’ (1928-1945). The Silent Generation grew up in a time when discussing mental health issues was considered taboo. Stiff upper lips and stoic attitudes were the norm. Seeking help for mental health challenges was seen as a sign of weakness.

Baby Boomers, being raised by the Silent Generation, were often taught a “tough-it-out” attitude toward mental health. As adolescents during the counterculture movement of the 1960’s, Linda and Susan Jane witnessed the deinstitutionalization of mental health care. Many boomers have been influenced by the idea that mental health issues can be resolved through personal growth and self- help. While some embrace therapy and self-exploration, others remain skeptical of psychiatric medications and therapies.

“Adversity breeds good people…” something Linda would say. Linda was a woman who overcame the struggles of an alcoholic father during adolescence, put herself through college while raising three active and involved children and partnering her husband for more than 30 years. Linda persevered to become a successful businesswoman and later began pursuing her passions for history and genealogy. Linda always offered words of encouragement and enjoyed seeing other people succeed, especially hard-working women. Unfortunately, Linda succumbed to a massive heart attack when she was only 62 years old. Her strength and determination in life will be an example and corner stone of supporting women through The Linda Jane Foundation.

“Good choices, good results, bad choices, bad results” is something Susan Jane would say often. However, when dealing with Mental Illness it isn’t always that clear. Susan Jane suffered from severe mental illness her entire life. She raised 2 children, went back to college in her 40’s and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology when she was 50. However, after years of medications to treat her multiple diagnoses, she started to have physical side effects, including renal failure and eventually a kidney transplant. Susan was funny, intelligent and loved animals with passion. Unfortunately, she was never able to fulfill her dream to advocate for better Mental Health awareness during her lifetime. The Linda Jane Foundation will accomplish this in her honor.

The Linda Jane Foundation has been created to provide direct financial assistance to women seeking mental health support, whether it’s for therapy sessions, medication management, or other vital mental health services. Our mission is rooted in the belief that financial circumstances should never stand between a woman and her mental well-being. The mission of The Linda Jane Foundation is to empower women today to inspire progress for tomorrow.
